What Groundwater Is

Wonder Down Under Home

Zone 7 Home

In simple terms, groundwater is water found underground in the cracks and crevices of fractured rocks and between grains of sand and gravel.  It is a hidden source of drinking water for nearly 50% of the entire United States.  Within our country’s borders, approximately 30 to 60 quadrillion gallons of fresh water exist within 2,500 feet below the earth’s surface.  This underground water supply is a major source of water for irrigation and industry.
