Zone 7 Board of Directors declare March 14-20, 2022 Fix a Leak Week
A small investment in time can yield a big savings in water
LIVERMORE, Calif. (March 10, 2022) – Every year, more than 10,000 gallons of water is wasted in homes due to easy-to-fix leaks. Nationwide, household leaks equate to more than 1 trillion gallons of water lost every year.
At last month’s board meeting, the Zone 7 Board of Directors declared March 14 to March 20 Fix a Leak Week. This marks the agency’s seventh year participating in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) annual Fix-A-Leak Week and the Agency is reminding residents and businesses of the easy steps they can take to help save water.
The benefits of Fix a Leak Week are clear—with very little time and investment, Tri-Valley residents can save money on utility bills while supporting local water resources.
On Zone 7’s website Water Wise Wendy, Zone 7’s water-saving guru, shares eight approachable tips that anyone can follow to locate and fix wasteful water leaks.
Fixing irrigation leaks, just one example, can save up to 500 gallons per month, per customer. It is especially important to check irrigation systems this year, as the Tri-Valley experienced several below freezing nights which can damage and break pipes, causing leaks. This is a great time of year to do a quick inspection of irrigation systems by looking for signs of excess moisture and damaged components.
“Facing a third drought year, it is critical that we do everything we can to eliminate water waste,” said Zone 7 Water Agency Board President Angela Ramirez Holmes. “Fix-A-Leak Week in March always reminds us to check our surroundings at work and at home to make sure that we are not using, and paying for, water that we do not need.”
As the drought continues to strain the region’s water supply, Zone 7 is supporting water mandatory conservation efforts by educating customers on how to make small, yet impactful, changes in behavior.
